That big green patch along the trail is not newly That big green patch along the trail is not newly sprouted grass nor emerging spring ephemerals, but actually a patch of climacium, one of Indiana's over 200 moss species. Unlike most of our woodland plants, in the right habitat mosses can stay green year round, with some species even thriving through winter.

Belonging to the ancient group, Bryophytes mosses are drought tolerant. When their environment is too dry they will go into a dormant state. With enough moisture and temperatures above freezing mosses are able to photosynthesize, making for a refreshing green site along a winter hike.
