Wed. Bird Walk: Migration Mania
Get ready for the greatest show on earth: spring migration! This month, we’re ramping things up with a full morning of birding at River Preserve’s best migration-magnet hotspots. All flavors of spring migrants can be expected this time of year here, including tanagers, vireos, and warblers. With luck, we’ll find over 60 species – all before lunch! We’ll get an early start at 7:30 am at the Benton Dam, then speed-bird our way through the preserve with short site-to-site carpooling and hikes. The exact route and pacing will be up to the discretion of the leaders based on target species and bird activity, so be ready to move at peregrine speed!
The group will head out at 7:30 a.m. — please plan travel time accordingly.

Feature Grain Day – Einkorn
Our feature grain series continues for 2026 as we focus on Ancient Grains. Because ancient grains have not been genetically manipulated like modern grains, they are considered to be healthier for human consumption. Einkorn is the feature grain for May. Einkorn is an ancient variety of wheat that humans may have first started using 30,000 years ago. The flour is commonly used for muffins, pancakes and even yeast bread. Bonneyville Mill will grind Einkorn on May 9th and 2lb bags of the flour will be available for purchase. We will also offer free baked samples made with Einkorn from 11am-2pm.

Creatures of the Night: Bugs of the Underworld
As night falls, the places we spend time outdoors can feel like a very different place. Familiar trails melt into shadows, and the daytime soundscape is replaced with things that go bump in the night as nocturnal creatures come out to play. Join the Elkhart County Parks as we lift night’s veil to reveal the hidden lives of these creatures of the night, from spiders weaving webs to bats on the wing.
Discover some of nature’s gnarliest macroinvertebrates lurking just beneath the surface of our creeks and ponds. Pull on your muck boots and grab a headlamp as we step into the shallows and take a closer look at the alien world of aquatic insects. Decide for yourself which are dragons and which are damsels.
This hike is weather-dependent. Check the event page for updates before heading out.
