5 Tips to Keep Your Keepsakes Safe

Photographs are wonderful documents of our lives, past and present. They are an invaluable tool for telling our histories and sharing our stories. Here are five of the most important things you can do to keep your photographs in the best possible shape.

  1. Store your photos safely. Keep your photos out of areas with experience extreme fluctuations in temperature or humidity. This can cause photos to warp and curl, or become brittle and crack. Colors also fade faster, especially with early color photographs from the 1960s and 70s. Attics and basements may seem ideal for storage, but since most have unstable conditions, they are often the worst place in your house to keep photos. Avoid storing in rooms that share an exterior wall. Instead, look for storage spaces that stay relatively temperate, like a bedroom closet.

Ever spotted a tree with thorns and wondered, “W Ever spotted a tree with thorns and wondered, “What kind of tree is this?”

Chances are, you were looking at a locust tree—we have two types: the Black Locust and the Honey Locust.

Here’s how you can tell them apart:

THORNS – The Honey Locust has much larger, more dramatic thorns than the Black Locust.
LEAVES – The Honey Locust has doubly compound leaves, while the Black Locust just has compound leaves.

Take a look at the photo:
On the right is a Honey Locust leaf
On the left is a Black Locust leaf

Next time you're on the trail, see if you can spot the difference!

Yesterday, members of our Interpretive Team visite Yesterday, members of our Interpretive Team visited the Gene Stratton-Porter Historic Site in Rome City as they prepare for a future program on local, inspirational naturalists and explorers.

They were guided by Tiffany Parker, Northern Regional Manager at Indiana State Museum & Historic Sites. Tiffany shared insights into the life and legacy of Gene Stratton-Porter.

If you’re not familiar with Gene Stratton-Porter, she was a remarkable naturalist, conservationist, filmmaker, and prolific author. Her writings captured the beauty of the Limberlost Swamp and surrounding areas, inspiring generations to care about nature. She was also a trailblazer in the early conservation movement, helping to lay the groundwork for environmental stewardship in Indiana and beyond.
