Featured Speaker – Britt Redd

April 18 at 7:00 PM

Britt Redd, Certified Urban Planner, will use compelling visuals to explore parts of United States history that have shaped cities but are often excluded from city planning discourse. Past decisions created the racial inequities in cities that exist today. As we journey through and honor the contextual history, weโ€™ll turn a critical eye toward policymaking and our relationships with each other to help create a path toward healing, reconciliation, and liberation. Part of the Indiana Humanities Council Advancing Racial Equity Speakers Bureau.

Bird Language Lessons

The sound of spring birds may be music to your ears, but do you know the messages behind the melodies? From predicting when a hawk is about to fly overhead to finding a warbler hidden in the bushes, learn the secret language of birds in this โ€œears-onโ€ class that will teach you the behavior behind the calls, and how to ID them by sound. The first part of the workshop will explore bird behavior, followed by a hike, where we will practice listening techniques and discover what birds we can find by using only our ears.

Creatures of the Night: Amphibians

April 25 at 7:30 PM

As night falls, the places we spend time outdoors can feel like a very different place. Familiar trails melt into shadows and the daytime soundscape is replaced with things that go bump in the night as nocturnal creatures come out to play. Join the Elkhart County Parks as we lift night’s veil to reveal the hidden lives of these creatures of the night, from spiders weaving webs to bats on the wing. In April, woodland vernal ponds spring to life as amphibians wake from their slumber and gather for the ultimate pool party. Grab your rainboots and join us for a wetland walk on the wild side as we look and listen for these charismatic critters. NOTE โ€“ this program includes a 2-mile hike in wet conditions, and may not be suitable for younger children.

What to Expect: Come prepared for a 2-mile hike in muddy terrain. This hike is weather-dependent. Please check the event page for updates before heading out.
Suggested Gear: Rainboots, waterproof layers, and a headlamp/flashlight.
Meet At: Briar Patch Shelter, located on the south side of Bonneyville Mill County Park (53373 C.R. 131), on C.R. 8 in Bristol. Directions here.
