Winter birds are out in full force, and those with a watchful eye can find some truly remarkable species. Bundle up and shake off the winter blues with a morning walk full of wild-winged encounters. Avian highlights might include Winter Wren, White-throated Sparrow, Barred Owl, and Pileated Woodpecker. We’ll meet at Briar Patch Shelter to observe what’s hopping at the feeders, then move out for the woodland walk. The group will head out at 8 a.m. – please plan travel time accordingly.

In commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, this exhibit examines the servicemen in Elkhart County who were at Pearl Harbor on that fateful day. View the exhibit and examine our community’s connection to the day that will live in infamy.

Winter Tree I.D.

Winter can be tough to identify trees since, from a distance, they all look alike. With a closer look, however, trees can be as individual as people and easily identified with traits like their buds and bark. Branch out and to know some of our deciduous tree friends in this hands-on program. Along with ID tips, participants will receive their own winter tree I.D. book to take home.

Join a Naturalist to explore one of our many splendid wetlands in winter. Participants will enjoy a guided hike admiring some of the season’s changes while also learning about how some wetland animals make it through the harsh winter season. Pearl Harbor Commemoration

To mark the 80th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, the museum will be open late for people to view our temporary exhibit, Pearl Harbor at 80. Also, at 7 p.m. there will be a special ceremony to remember the servicemen who were present that day, and those who were killed during the attack.

Make your own old-fashioned, wooden, animated flip toy with a park naturalist. Give it as a gift or enjoy it yourself. All ages are bound to love watching the acrobatic bear flipping, spinning, and performing entertaining tricks at the press of a handle. Instructions and supplies will be provided.

Volunteer Work Day

Learn new skills, care for the environment, meet new friends, and be a part of something big – sign up for a Volunteer Work Day! On December 11, help manage the prairie and other sensitive ecosystems, by assisting in the removal of unwanted trees. All equipment will be provided, but participants are encouraged to wear work gloves and bring loppers or shears.

Not a fan of hiking in the dark? No worries — the Elkhart County Parks is keeping the lights on just for you! Hike a trail with illuminated markers guiding the way and enjoy the sights and sounds of Bonneyville Mill County Park on a winter’s night. Hikers can start any time between 5:30 and 7:30 from the Feedlot Shelter trailhead. The hike will end at the One-room Schoolhouse with hot chocolate and cookies made with Bonneyville flour to make the evening complete.
