Join us for a morning walk at Bonneyville as we encounter hawks, sparrows, juncos, and other winter species. The group will meet at Briar Patch Shelter warming house to observe the bird feeder activity, then head out for a walk through the park.

Christmas Bird Count

Ever wanted to be a scientist for a day? Interested in birdwatching? Perfect! Join the Elkhart County Christmas Bird Count, part of a nation-wide Audubon event centered on the beauty and conservation of birds. During the count, volunteer teams tally all the birds seen and heard in their assigned area, and help provide a one-day snapshot of bird populations across the county. Counters can join a team in the field or count from the comfort of home. Participants can choose to gather data all day or as little as one hour. Come be a part of this annual event!

Calling all crafters! Discover the fun art of needle felting and learn how to create cute works of art sculpted entirely from wool! This intro workshop will cover the tools and materials to use, basic techniques of needle felting, and how to create a cute, needle-crafted animal to take home at the end of the class. All materials will be provided, but bring an old cushion or thick towel to use as a felting surface.

Curator’s Talk – Crossroads: Forging a Path

Take a guided tour of our new exhibit, Crossroads of Elkhart County: Forging A Path. Staff who developed the gallery will lead guests through the installation, giving visitors an inside perspective on the Native people who lived in this region. Staff will share things they learned along the way, talk about how they created the exhibit, and interpret the many cultures that lived in the Elkhart County area prior to arrival of Europeans.

Cross-Country Ski Night

The Elkhart County Parks will host a cross country ski event at Bonneyville Mill County Park. This event is open to anyone. No equipment will be provided. The trail will be illuminated and well marked. The trail is 1.5 miles long with rolling terrain. This is a full moon event.

Astronomy Night

Join us for an evening studying the stars. Learn about the world of astronomy, Greek and Roman mythology expressed in the naming of constellations, and how stars change through the seasons in an informational presentation. Participants will also make a star chart that will show the constellations at any time of year. Enjoy a hot dog or roast a marshmallow and gaze up at the beautiful heavens and about our stellar companions.

Join Registered Yoga Teacher Amanda for an hour of empowering yoga in the parks. Enjoy guided practice welcoming of all skill levels in a relaxing park environment. Participants are encouraged to dress for the weather, bring water, and their own mats – a limited number of mats will be available for use.

In January, Yoga in the Parks will welcome the New Year with a practice focused on new beginnings at the Elkhart County Historical Museum.

Over 100 photographs will be on display at the Elkhart County Historical Museum. The fun starts on Saturday, January 26 at 10 a.m. with a reception for photographers, judges, and the public. Refreshments will end at 12 p.m. but the photos will remain on display for the entire week. Visiting hours are 9 a.m.–5 p.m., Jan 26–Feb 2.
